Whois Main Domains List Help Past & Future Policies (AUP) Bug Report

This page is currently not maintained. This will change when new website is ready

In addition to this page it is recommended you also look at "Bug Report" webpage which lists known bugs (which are sometimes features that have not been fully implemented yet) and dates when they will probably be fixed or will be implemented

Future Section

The following are our plans as far as completewhois whois server engine features and its access by whois cgi. As plans this is rather a wish-list so don't assume this will be done on the date specified.

Early Spring 2004: New dns resolver code that when itegrated with whois server will allow to show nameservers for all domains. We will also work on the templates for various domains so that when displayed even if domain is not standard .com/.net/.org it will show similar top portion indicating nameservers and domain registrar

Fall 2003, Spring 2003: Continuing updates to country domain names to make sure we're getting all the data we possibly can (last major update to country domain sublookup parameters list  was year ago). This will possibly continue until all domains are checked.

Spring 2004: Integration of BGP lookups into whois to allow you to do sublookups to ASN based on ip address (based on announcements of most specific ip block that includes given ip). This is being postponed as it relates to completewhois and will be done together with larger project on integrated ip whois and ip routing database

January-March 2004: IPv6 version of whois server (whois already supports ipv6 whois lookups but you can not do whois query right now through ipv6).

Spring or Fall 2004: (Postponed for now) Extending whois cgi to use cookies and allow users to save their favorite settings and options this way. Possibly some kind of user/password access may also be provided for frequent users. More extensive use of JavaScript so that certain options are enabled/disabled or hidden/shown on what user selects

January 2004: IP options that provide access to more of the features of RIPE v3 whois server for ip lookups in ARIN and APNIC databases

Fall 2003 - Spring 2004: Working on making currently grayed-out options available (except those dealing with unified format). Working on using internal cached database for ips and domains  and directly using dumps of data from ip registries.

Spring 2004: (The work in this area is being advanced) Version 2.0 of the code that would use special templates and separate specific data fields from many different whois outputs that various whois registries have and then provide these data fields in one or more unified standard formats

And,  of course, lets now forget - BUG FIXES BUG FIXES BUG FIXES ...

Past Section

The whois engine development started in April 2001 and from April 2001 to July 2002, changes were kept in the text file, which you can access and see it here. The code developed then still fully exists today and it the core that does actual lookups to various whois servers and does some simple text formatting.

From July 2002 to Feb 2003 some maintenance was done to fix bugs and add some non-working top level domains. The template was created for the new website (previous one up to July 2003 was very simple one-line lookup field and list of working domains - all in one page) with complex query features to be presented to the user and development started on version 2.0 of the code (the one that can do data transformation to standard format). The whois engine available to users was still the same and (so changes file which previously was accessible by command CHANGES or HELP was not maintained).

From March 2003 to June 2003 new features were being added based on concepts developed earlier and afterwards bug fixes to get the features working beyond alpha-testing. All information about added features is part of source code so we can not provide it here. At the same time in May and June website was being developed including a lot of work on related Hijacked IP section.

Newly created website and greatly improved engine are scheduled for official presentation to end-users (on mailing lists)  on July 18, 2003.  Any new features to the whois engine after and very shortly before that date will appear below.

01-01-04 There have been serious change in the code in how we resolve ip address of dns server as we added our own dns resolver and can not only get ip address of nameserver but try to find list of correct nameservers associated with any domain even if it is not listed in whois. With this change we added ability to display domain whois top summary portion in new standard including registry, registrar, nameservers, expiration and update dates, etc. This is obtained using new whois parser for 25 TLDs and the list will grow:  .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .edu,  .name, .coop, .us, .cc, .la, .ca, .uk, .ag, .ru, .su,  .de, .ae, .ag, .at, .sc, .hn, .gi, .ua, .br, .ck, .cm, .fo, .fr, .re, .ir, .is, .ug, .it, .au

11-25-03: Some fixes in ip whois code to improve retrieval of data from external sources, particularly KRNIC

11-20-03: For last months we have continued to review additional top level domains, so far all domain a-f and u-z have been reviewed - this represents close to 1/2 of all top level domains (the includes new code for those .za domains where whois data is available)

11-15-03: Unified domain whois data parsing code for handling .us, .info, .la, .org, .biz domains that just like with .org/.net provides for ability to see ip of the dns servers. New code in general for .us that will handle various subdomains (.kids.us, .fed.us, .k12.vi.us  and info for other state subdomains).

11-10-03: There has been number of changes done to some internal parts of the whois engine code that deal with opening up queries to outside servers in order to improve efficiency, limit  abuse and possibility of blackholing of our servers.

09-26-03: Fixes for whois handling for several domains. Change in some internals of IP Whois code, of what is seen publicly, when you do whois for APNIC or RIPE range, ARIN info pointing to RIPE or APNIC is no longer displayed and you see direct one for the registry. ASN searches by name if name appears in ARIN are now also working

09-20-03: Added handling of .info and .biz domain in the same way its done for .com and .org. This means those resolving ip addresses for dns servers within the output. Also formatting is modified for .org, .com, .net, .info, .biz and they will all appear in a way similar to .info (name of field starts right at the line start)

09-15-03: Bug fixing with ip whois (better handling of ReferralServer field by ARIN) and several more top level domains fixed (about dozen, but out of order, only added those that now have running whois server on port43 to refer to, still need to go through all the domains starting with "f" now to make all the config data current especially for web referrals)

09-10-03: Additional domains added that are 2nd level domains under .com and .net but where company was acting as registrar for special 2nd level domains like cjb.net,  br.com, cn.com, de.com, eu.com, gb.com, gb.net, hu.com, no.com, qc.com, ru.com, sa.com, se.com, se.net, uk.com, uk.net, us.com, uy.com, za.com, eu.org

08-22-03: Additional bugs have been fixed with whois for some domains and several more top-level domains added

08-11-03: For ip lookups added specific hookups to lookup for PSI.NET ip space in Cogent Communications rwhois server. Also proper lookups and special code is added for RS.ENTELCHILE.NET (LACNIC ips but mostly older ones assigned by ARIN and not in standard 200.x ip block), they run non-standard rwhois server that has to be looked up using whois protocol to get full results.

08-07-03: Some bugs have been fixed that have to do with lookup on ip and dns info lookup for that ip. Fixed problem with ".ca" where whois only provides results for top-level domain (domain.ca) but did not do proper lookup if its domain.xx.ca (where xx is to letter province code).

08-04-03: From webpage "most complete data" option will be removed as its equivalent having both "maximum domain info" and "maximum ip" and too many don't realize it and check all 3 of these. Instead abuse contact option will be added to list of main options - this is new  macro to provide whois output from both whois.abuse.net (for domains) and whois.cyberabuse.org (for ips).

08-03-03: A bug was fixed which caused whois service to fail on the 1st for number feeder servers (had to do with installation of program in OS and not actual code actually).

07-19-03: ARIN's new "ReferralServer:" field is now supported and used for finding rwhois server for sublookups.

07-18-03: Changed code dealing with .ORG registry, we now get data through whois protocol (before used webget to infotransition.org) from PIR and do text transformation to make it look similar to internic. This also allows nameserver ip lookups to work on .ORG domains like they do for .COM and .NET

07-18-03: New version of whois engine was by default removing messages about domain not found for .com/.net domains and giving empty results (this is similar to how its done for other country domains, if certain filter parameters are not met all results are filtered). There were complaints and we know added actual test for results and provide our own message that domain is not found. Slowly this functionality will be expanded to other top-level domains.

07-17-03: Finally added support for when query ends with ".in-addr.arpa" this is now  converted to normal ip address
